The daughter of a Danish architect and the granddaughter of a screenwriter and director, Johansson graduated from Manhattan's Professional Children's School in 2002. Her first noted performance was in The Horse Whisperer (《情深說話未曾講》, 1998).
In 2003, Johansson earned critical praise for her role opposite Bill Murray in Lost in Translation (《迷失東京》, 2003) and her starring turn in Girl with a Pearl Earring (《畫意私情》, 2003) with Colin Firth. In the spring of 2008, Scarlett Johansson got engaged (訂婚) to her boyfriend and fellow actor Ryan Reynolds. The couple quietly married in late September at a wilderness retreat (度假村) near Vancouver, Canada. The ceremony was attended by a small group of family and friends.
