【明報專訊】Wild animals in Hong Kong are decreasing because of degradation or loss of habitats (生境) due to urbanisation (城市化). In Hong Kong, wild animals are protected by the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance, as are their habitats.

Among the protected species is Romer's Tree Frog (盧文氏蛙). The smallest frog in Hong Kong, it is about 1.5cm to 2.5cm long. The species is distinguishable by the X-mark on its back. Romer's tree frogs, endemic to Hong Kong, are found in Chek Lap Kok and on Lantau Island, Lamma Island and Po Toi.

Some of Hong Kong's protected species are named after Hong Kong:

◆Hong Kong Cascade Frog (香港瀑蛙)

◆Hong Kong Newt (香港蠑螈, below)
